Basic job interview preperation that is often forgotten
One of the many frustrations that I hear from companies that are hiring, stem from the very start of the process where candidates are first interviewed.
Surprisingly, when companies interview candidates (at any level) they often feel let down that the candidate has not done very little in terms of interview preparation.
This let down is even more apparent when the company actually identified the candidate as one in which they were excited about meeting and one that looked really good on paper.
I completely understand when it is a situation where the candidate is passive and is taking the meeting more of a courtesy, but not preparing for a meeting where your intention is to land the job is absolutely unacceptable.
It is even more shocking when it is a junior candidate that has very limited job prospects and may even be complaining about the lack of entry level opportunities available to recent graduates which is also something that I hear from companies.
In terms of interview preparation, at the very least, review the company's ENTIRE website, google the trends and activities for the industry where the company operates, and do some light research on who the company's competitors are in the market and how they position themselves.
If the meeting is one that is considered successful and the interviewee is asked to come back for another interview, the candidate should speak to both past and current employees of the organization as well as review and research questions that arose during the first meeting.
Farewell,
Mike
