A lesson for the next generation
This is probably not shocking to some of us, but CEO's and Presidents are continuing to tell us that the one area of weakness that they would like to improve with new fresh university hires is their communication skills.
Areas that are most complained about:
1. Poor grammar with often an inability to write a business letter or a professional email.
2. Poor verbal skills with a preference to write messages to colleagues rather than discuss issues in person.
3. Communication distraction. Responding to texts, emails and calls in no particular order of priority.
These complaints are often lost on a younger generation who laughs off concerns as old school processes and people that do not understand the future work environment.
There is one thing for these younger people to consider though. It might be possible for you to type code all day with your headphones on and be paid to do it with a decent wage, but technology is a double edged sword. It moves so fast that it can kill positions and industries as quickly as it creates them. As the employee becomes older and a new cloud program is able to code for companies automatically, that inward focused individual will be forced to learn social skills to help them redefine themselves and land a new position.
Farewell,
Mike
