Interesting Grocery and Economic statistics for Canada for the second quarter of 2012 (Part 2 of 2)
Here is the second of two installments of interesting Canadian Grocery statistics (I think anyway) for the second Quarter of 2012.
They take into account total trends and results for 2012 year to date.
The data has been collected by compiling information from the following sources. (Statistics Canada/Nielsen Data/Retail Council of Canada)
1.Drug Channel is outpacing the growth of the Grocery Channel for groceries. 5% growth vs. 3%
2.Over the past year Canadians are buying more:
Vegetables
Hot beverages
Deserts
Home Meal Replacements
Sauces
3.Over the past year Canadians are buying less of:
Prepared Foods
Bread & Rolls
Frozen Foods
Baking Goods
4.Canadians are spending more on these foods:
Hot beverages
Fruit
Seafood
5.Canadians are spending less on these foods:
Freash fruit
Cold beverages
6.Canadians are spending more on these products:
Cosmetics
Over The Counter products
7.Canadians are spending less on these products:
Paper Products
Baby Care Products
Shaving Products
Household Products
Oral Hygiene
8.CPG prices have risen for the 6th quarter in a row.
9.The Drug Channel is raising prices at more than twice the rate of the Grocery and Mass channel.
10.Regional share of products sold on discount are as follows:
Maritimes 36%
Quebec 35%
Ontario 34%
West 33%
But Ontario increased their discount purchases by 9% vs. the average of 6%
11.Western Canadians use more coupons than the rest of Canada.
6% vs. the National average of 4.5%
12.Discount retailers have increased their market share by 3% in both the Grocery and Drug channels.
They own over 30% of the market.
25% of Canadians earning over 100K shop at Discount retailers.
