Requesting a meeting with a boss to discuss performance

This can be a sticky subject if not handled carefully.

The key to success is to maintain a professional, upbeat and positive demeanor when approaching a manager about a career meeting.

For some people who have trouble showing positive emotion and enthusiasm, this may be difficult so be sure to practice with your spouse or family member if necessary.

A request to discuss performance can sometimes create anxiety for

both employee and manager, and can often suggest the meeting will have a theme of “I’m not happy.” It is important for a manager to not become defensive and/or agitated for the meeting so positive energy can disarm a manager who might be surprised about the meeting request.

I suggest asking for this meeting in person rather than sending an email so that the positive energy level is evident to the manager.

If a meeting can only be set by telephone because of distance, ask for the meeting at the end of a good business discussion call so that the manager can see a high level of engagement rather than someone who is frustrated.

This not only sets the tone for the meeting, but a strong business discussion prior to a meeting request will leave the manager with positive feelings regarding the employee which can carry over to positive feelings and thoughts about the employee as they prepare for the meeting.

Good energy and positive outlooks are the keys for ALL communication regarding a career meeting so ensure that one is in a good place mentally before requesting such a meeting.

Farewell,

Mike
