Interesting Grocery Statistics for Canada for the first quarter of 2012

I have put together a few interesting Canadian Grocery statistics (I think anyway) for the first Quarter of 2012.

The data has been collected by compiling information from the following sources. (Statistics Canada/Nielsen Data/Retail Council of Canada)

FIVE FOOD FOR THOUGHT

1.

Seafood sales grew in Q1 at 6% in Canada versus an average of 5% for the past year.

2.

Deli Meat sales have declined in Q1 by -7% versus an average of -8% for the past year.

3.

Private Label bakery products have increase in sales by 7% in Q1 and they now represent 30% of the bakery grocery spend.

4.

Private Label product sales now account for an 18% share of the total household purchases.

That is equivalent to the combined share of the top 6 CPG companies in Canada. (P&G, Kraft, Nestle, Saputo, Pepsi, Unilever)

5.

Discount retailers in grocery are still winning consumers in Canada.

The average household now spends 5% more than they did last year at discount retailers.

This has come at the expense of traditional grocery retailers.
