Documenting Successes

Fall is here!

I get an influx of calls this month from people who are now getting back into search mode after enjoying the summer with their family.

Often people think that at this time of year, a switch gets flicked on and all the hiring begins.  It is no longer that easy.  There is not the plethora of positions out there as there was 20 years ago and the competition is much more fierce than it used to be at this time of year.

Be sure to:

Document your successes regularly

and

Update your resume regularly

Candidates who do both of these things on a monthly basis say that it not only helps them better describe what they are doing in an interview, but it also allows them to provide the most relevant information to a potential employer.  In addition to this there is another key result from doing these exercises.  That result is that this discipline will often act as a KPI update for the individual as to how they are performing versus their mandate year to date.

This check-in (often on KPI's outside of the usual topline and/or bottom-line numbers) can act as a pace measuring tool that you might sometimes receive from a mentor or a coach.  This can allow you to back on track and keep the person accountable to all of your mandate.

This also allows an individual to deliver on items that are not a priority in their mandate, but are maybe a priority for their own personal growth.  For example, a marketer might be focused on digital KPI's but maybe wants to deliver results in the area of customer engagement because that area is now in high demand.  In this instance, measuring tools can be used to ensure that secondary areas also improve under the candidates control which in turn allows for more results as well as a better personal story about their skill set and own marketability.

For candidates working for companies on a calendar/fiscal year, it allows some quick tweaking to better position oneself for when the books close on December 31st.

Farewell,

Mike
