What employers seek in young employees

It is close to the summer season and it is the time that university students are often trying to secure summer jobs.  If your kids are in this boat, you can help guide them in landing those ideal positions by helping them showcase the skills that employers seek the most.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers in the U.S. put together a list of the top 10 skills that employers seek in order of importance.  Companies are often frustrated with the lack of candidates that possess these skills.  Make sure your kids know what companies are looking for and have them be able to communicate those skills with behavioral examples in interviews.

1.   Ability to work in a team

2.   Ability to make decisions and solve problems

3.   Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work

4.   Ability to communicate verbally with people inside and outside an organization

5.   Ability to obtain and process information

6.   Ability to analyze quantitative data

7.   Technical knowledge related to the job

8.   Proficiency with computer software programs

9.   Ability to create and or edit written reports

10. Ability to sell and influence others
