Traits of the new generation of employees

There has been a lot said about the younger generation’s tendency to share too much information through social media.

I don’t wish to discuss this point but I will share something that happened to me last week.

I Google searched a senior executive from one of my former employers so I could get an update as to what they were doing as well as see if there had been any recent articles or press releases on him.

I did find some recent entries on him, unfortunately they were mostly 10 second videos of him that were posted by his university aged daughter that were recorded in his home where he may or may not have been consuming too many adult beverages.

I think a lot of

parents like to have close friend like relationships with our kids but be cautious of what they may be posting.

These short videos are becoming more commonplace as they do not require much data usage so they are much easier to upload, store and send.

Speaking of the younger generation in the workforce:

These are my 3 areas that are important to the younger generation, so consider them when trying to keep them engaged in the business as well as drive the effectiveness of the business.

1.

Transparency.

Consistent feedback is sought by the younger generation.

The old quarterly reviews may not be sufficient anymore so you may need to check in with your employees more regularly.

2.

Hierarchy. Many young employees prefer more of a flat organization structure.

Even if this is not possible, it might be worthwhile to consider getting management to become a little more accessible with younger employees.

Non-confrontational relationships and relationships that are both personal and work related are often created and desired.

Be careful as to make sure managers know how to define the boundaries of these types of relationships for when the business matures.

Many employees struggle when suddenly asked to go from colleague to manager and the business should not suffer as a result of this.

3.

Studies show that the younger generation is uncomfortable with the word boss.

“Leads” are words/titles that resonate well with this generation.

Maybe it makes them feel like they are still in 4

th

year university and doing group business case assignments. Whatever the reason, if performance can be increased maybe this approach to titles can make sense.

Collaboration is often desired in this environment but make sure timelines are defined so that the business will not suffer.

Farewell,

Mike
