Show Your Passion
I am consistently asked by people in cpg as to what industry that I recommend them to enter, as many of them are very disenchanted with the consumer goods industry for a whole variety or reasons which are too long to get into here.
The retail industry is the most applicable answer for people that are truly passionate about consumer goods and who would like to stay close to the end consumer but move to an area which is more active with more long term potential.
The reason for this is that the retail industry offers important and valuable experience in full BtoC integration and it moves people into an area that currently has more leverage than other areas within the consumer products space.
But if retail is not of interest, I am usually immediately asked what industry/industries are especially active?
I always follow up that question with suggesting to them that they
should rather focus on industries of particular interest to them instead. Hot industries will cool and passion is what will keep people engaged with their jobs.
As people age it is even more essential that they are passionate about where they work as it will help delay the inevitable grim reaper of human resources from visiting you as well as allow for additional years of maximum earning potential.
Be able to clearly articulate your experience and success within cpg or any industry and be able to closely tie those elements to your industry of passion or interest.
This will prove be the best ammunition for a successful interview, or for convincing someone to give you an opportunity in a new industry despite not having any industry experience.
Farewell,
Mike
