A Crucial Leadership Skill!
The two top characteristics that clients consistently request from us for senior executives are:
1. High Competitive Drive
2. Engaging presence with likeability
The first point is tougher to develop.
It is usually embedded in the DNA but the second point is something that can be improved if worked on consistently.
Competitive people can be very valuable to organizations in independent contributing roles, but if that is combined with a touch of arrogance, than overall leadership begins to be questioned for that individual and perceived ceilings are created by companies for that individuals long term potential within the organization.
Companies seek leaders who are humble, engaging and ones that inspire others regardless of the department or division where they operate.
How do you do develop likability?
You build equity and credibility within an organization with strong communication, the sharing information, and asking many questions in order to fully understand situations as well as understand your fellow colleagues.
These colleagues may eventually become reports and if there is a mutual respect, it will benefit the careers of both individuals.
"High Flyers" or "Potential Organization Leaders" will sometimes skip rungs on the corporate ladder, and the ones with good relationships will usually be the ones that survive in the long term.
The current economic situation demands more individual accountability combined with less time given to complete mandates.
It is now even more essential for leaders to execute their plans and mandates quickly, and this can only be done when a team is truly behind their leader, so engaging leadership and likability has now become an even more important personality trait that leaders need to refine.
